The fungus is best known for causing dry rot in potato tubers, a severe storage disease. It colonizes plant tissues through wounds caused by harvesting or pest activity. Once established, the pathogen secretes enzymes that break down cell walls, causing the tissue to shrink, dry out, and become hollow or decayed.
