Globisporangium abappressorium is a soil-borne plant pathogen belonging to the class Oomycetes. Formerly classified within the genus Pythium, this pathogen has been reclassified into the genus Globisporangium based on phylogenetic evidence. It is a major threat to agricultural productivity, specifically targeting the roots of various herbaceous and woody plants.
The pathogen is primarily responsible for root rots, damping-off, and seedling blights. Infected plants exhibit necrotic, dark-colored root systems, stunted growth, and sudden wilting. In greenhouse environments, G. abappressorium often causes total collapse of seedling populations, resulting in significant economic losses for nursery operators and crop producers.
The life cycle of Globisporangium abappressorium involves the production of biflagellated motile zoospores that move through soil water films to locate host roots. Once a host is reached, the pathogen encysts and penetrates the root tissue. During periods of environmental stress, it produces thick-walled oospores, which are survival structures capable of persisting in the soil for extended periods until the next suitable host becomes available.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. G. abappressorium thrives in waterlogged, poorly aerated soils and conditions with high humidity. Low temperatures combined with excessive moisture create the ideal environment for zoospore migration and infection, making crops particularly vulnerable during the early seedling stage or during seasons with heavy rainfall.
Effective management strategies include cultural practices such as improving soil drainage, using sterilized substrates in greenhouses, and employing strict sanitation protocols to prevent the introduction of the pathogen. Crop rotation is essential in open field conditions. When necessary, chemical control involves the application of fungicides specific to oomycetes, applied as seed treatments or drench applications to protect the young root zone.
