Previously classified under the genus Pythium, this pathogen is now recognized as a distinct member of the Globisporangium genus. It acts as a primary cause of damping-off and root rot diseases, severely affecting the establishment of various agricultural crops.

The pathogen primarily attacks seedlings and young roots. It induces symptoms such as browning and decay of the root system, pre-emergence seed decay, and seedling wilt. Crops such as cereals, sugar beet, and various vegetables are particularly susceptible. The destruction of the root tissues prevents nutrient and water uptake, leading to yellowing, stunting, and the eventual death of the affected plants.

The life cycle of Globisporangium heterothallicum is highly moisture-dependent. It produces motile zoospores that navigate through soil pores filled with water to reach host roots via chemotaxis. Once they reach the host, they encyst and colonize the root tissue.
