Description

Globisporangium irregulare (formerly identified as Pythium irregulare) is a soil-borne plant pathogen belonging to the Kingdom Chromista and the class Oomycota. Often referred to as a "water mold," this microscopic organism thrives in moist environments and is a major cause of root rot, seedling damping-off, and stem lesions across a broad host range, including commercial vegetables, ornamentals, and various cereal crops.

The pathogenicity of this organism is primarily focused on the root system. Upon infection, the pathogen colonizes the primary and lateral roots, destroying the root cortex. This leads to the characteristic symptoms of stunted plant growth, chlorosis, wilting, and often total plant collapse. Seedlings are particularly vulnerable, frequently suffering from the "black leg" condition, where the base of the stem turns necrotic and collapses shortly after emergence.

The biology of Globisporangium irregulare is deeply connected to water availability. It produces motile zoospores that swim through the soil water film, using chemical cues to locate host roots. Once a host is found, the pathogen encysts and penetrates the tissues. In the absence of a host or during stressful environmental periods, it survives by forming robust oospores, which can remain dormant in the soil for years, making eradication extremely difficult.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease development. High soil moisture, poor drainage, and low oxygen levels in the rhizosphere create an ideal environment for zoospore activity. The pathogen is efficiently disseminated via contaminated irrigation water, soil movement on farm equipment, infected transplants, and infested nursery substrates, posing a constant threat to intensive agricultural systems and greenhouse operations.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the disease cycle and limit the spread of the pathogen:

  • Implementing proper soil drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
  • Utilizing sterile, well-aerated potting mixes for greenhouse production.
  • Applying biological control agents such as Trichoderma species.
  • Sanitizing all equipment and irrigation water sources regularly.
  • Practicing strict hygiene during transplantation to avoid introducing soil-borne inoculum.
