Globisporangium rostratum

Systematic position and type of pathogen. Globisporangium rostratum belongs to the kingdom Chromista, phylum Oomycota. Previously classified within the Pythium genus, it has been reclassified due to phylogenetic studies. It is a soil-borne pathogen that acts as a serious threat to a wide range of botanical species by colonizing their root systems.

Diseases and host crops. This organism is a primary cause of damping-off, root rot, and basal stem rot. It affects a broad spectrum of crops, including vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as various ornamental flowers and nursery crops. Infected plants exhibit chlorosis, stunted growth, and sudden wilting due to the destruction of the root cortex.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is characterized by the production of biflagellate zoospores that swim through soil water films to infect plant tissues. To survive harsh environmental conditions, the pathogen produces oospores, which are thick-walled resting structures capable of persisting in the soil for extended periods, serving as the primary inoculum for new infections.

Development and spread conditions. Globisporangium rostratum thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high soil moisture levels. Poorly drained soils, over-irrigation, and high humidity in greenhouses are critical environmental triggers for rapid spread. It can be easily disseminated through contaminated irrigation water, infested soil clinging to tools, or infected nursery transplants.

Harmfulness and management measures. The economic impact is significant, particularly in intensive greenhouse operations where entire batches of seedlings can be lost. Effective management includes:

• Implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment and growing containers.
• Ensuring excellent soil drainage and avoiding waterlogged conditions.
• Utilizing fungicide drenches, such as metalaxyl or fosetyl-aluminum, when necessary.
• Applying biological control agents like Trichoderma harzianum as a preventative measure.
