Formerly classified under the genus Pythium, this organism is technically a stramenopile, often referred to as a water mold. It is a significant threat in both agricultural and nursery settings due to its ability to persist in the soil for extended periods.

The pathogen is primarily responsible for damping-off and various root rot diseases. It affects a wide host range, including many vegetable crops, ornamental flowers, and forest seedlings. The infection typically begins in the roots, causing decay that prevents the plant from absorbing essential nutrients and water.

The life cycle of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Under wet soil conditions, it produces motile zoospores that swim through water films to reach host roots. In the absence of a host, it survives adverse conditions by forming durable oospores that can remain dormant in the soil until favorable conditions return.
