Soybean mosaic

Soybean mosaic (Latin: Soybean mosaic virus, SMV) is a significant viral disease affecting soybean plants, caused by a virus belonging to the genus Potyvirus. As an obligate parasite, it specializes in colonizing members of the Fabaceae family, with cultivated soybeans being the most economically vulnerable host.

The primary symptoms include a characteristic mottling of leaves with alternating shades of light and dark green. As the infection progresses, leaves may become crinkled, stunted, or misshapen. Infected plants typically exhibit reduced height, shorter internodes, and a significant decrease in overall pod production, leading to major yield losses.

The biology of the virus involves both seed-borne transmission and mechanical transmission by insect vectors. The primary source of infection in a field is usually infected seed. During the growing season, the virus is disseminated mainly by aphids, which act as non-persistent vectors. More than 30 aphid species have been identified as capable of transmitting the virus by feeding on plant sap.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid population growth, such as mild temperatures and favorable humidity, correlate with high rates of disease spread. The virus can persist in stored seeds and may also survive in perennial weed hosts that serve as reservoirs during the off-season, allowing the cycle to repeat annually.

The economic impact of the disease is severe, with yield reductions ranging from 20% to 50% depending on the growth stage at which infection occurs. Furthermore, seed quality is compromised; seeds from infected plants may show reduced germination rates and characteristic brown or black mottling on the seed coat, which severely affects market value.

Integrated management is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:

• planting certified virus-free seeds;
• selecting resistant or tolerant soybean cultivars;
• controlling aphid vectors with appropriate insecticides;
• eradicating weed hosts from field margins;
• maintaining spatial isolation from previous season's soybean fields.
