This microscopic ascomycete is highly specialized, primarily affecting trees within the genus Tilia (linden/lime). The fungus acts as a parasite that targets the petioles, leading to distinct pathological changes in the host plant tissue.
The disease caused by this fungus is characterized by the development of dark, sunken lesions on the petioles. These necrotic areas disrupt the vascular system of the leaf stalk, often causing the leaf to droop, turn yellow, and detach prematurely. The severity of the symptoms depends on the intensity of the infection and the environmental conditions during the growing season.
The life cycle of Gnomonia petiolorum relies on overwintering in infected leaf litter. During the winter, the fungus forms perithecia—fruiting bodies that protect the spores—within the decaying petioles on the ground.
