Godronia cassandrae is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a significant phytopathogen, primarily affecting plants in the Ericaceae family, such as highbush blueberries and cranberries. Known as the causative agent of Godronia canker, this fungus is a major concern for commercial fruit growers due to its ability to weaken and kill established plant stems.

The infection manifests as lesions on the stems, which typically appear as localized brownish or reddish-brown areas. As the disease progresses, these cankers expand and may girdle the stem, restricting the flow of water and nutrients. Infected plants often show signs of premature wilting, foliage yellowing, and eventually, the dieback of entire branches, which significantly reduces plant productivity.

The biology of the fungus involves both asexual and sexual stages of reproduction. Asexual spores (conidia) are produced throughout the growing season and are spread by splashing rain and air currents. The pathogen enters the plant through wounds, such as those caused by frost, mechanical injury, or pruning sites, which serve as direct pathways into the vascular tissues.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Godronia cassandrae. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity, making rainy seasons particularly dangerous for plantations. Poor air circulation within the plant canopy creates a favorable microclimate for spore germination and colonization of new host tissues.

Effective control requires an integrated pest management approach. Key practices include the pruning and immediate removal of all symptomatic branches to reduce inoculum pressure. Growers should maintain proper plant spacing to improve air movement and reduce humidity. Additionally, timely application of protective fungicides during the active growth period is essential for preventing new infections in susceptible blocks.
