Grapevine angular leaf spot

Grapevine angular leaf spot is a bacterial disease caused by the phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. viticola. This bacterium belongs to the Pseudomonadaceae family and is a significant threat to viticulture. It acts as a specialized plant parasite that targets the vascular and parenchyma tissues of grapevine plants, leading to localized necrosis and general decline in vigor.

The primary symptoms are angular, vein-limited lesions on leaves, which may initially appear water-soaked before turning brown or black. As the necrosis progresses, the affected areas may dry out and crack, giving the leaves a ragged appearance. Infections can also develop on young shoots, petioles, and inflorescences, often resulting in premature senescence or fruit set failure.

The biological development cycle is highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. The bacterium overwinters in infected debris, fallen leaves, and diseased shoots. During favorable spring conditions—characterized by high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C—the pathogen multiplies and is disseminated by water splash, wind, or contaminated pruning tools.

Environmental spread occurs most rapidly during periods of frequent rainfall and prolonged leaf wetness. The pathogen relies on natural openings such as stomata or wounds caused by frost, hail, or agricultural maintenance to enter the host plant. Once established, the bacteria produce extracellular polysaccharides that aid in colonization and tissue degradation within the grapevine.

Controlling the disease requires an integrated approach to vineyard management. Key strategies include practicing strict hygiene, such as removing and destroying infected plant material and disinfecting pruning equipment to prevent mechanical transmission. Additionally, applying copper-based bactericides during the early season provides a protective barrier against the initial primary inoculum, helping to minimize the spread throughout the growing season.
