Description
Grapevine fanleaf degeneration is a serious viral disease caused by the Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), classified within the genus Nepovirus. This pathogen is responsible for significant economic losses in viticulture globally, as it affects the growth, vigor, and fruit production of grapevine varieties.
The disease manifests through distinct foliar symptoms, such as malformed fan-shaped leaves with abnormal vein patterns. Shoots exhibit shortened internodes, zig-zag growth, and double nodes. These morphological changes lead to a bushy appearance of the vines, coupled with severe millerandage, which results in poor fruit set and reduced yields.
The virus is primarily transmitted by soil-inhabiting ectoparasitic nematodes of the genus Xiphinema, particularly Xiphinema index. These nematodes acquire the virus while feeding on infected roots and transmit it to healthy vines. Additionally, GFLV is spread through infected propagation material, such as cuttings, rootstocks, and grafting scions.
Environmental conditions that favor the survival and movement of Xiphinema nematodes, such as soil moisture and specific soil textures, significantly influence the spread of the virus within a vineyard. Once established, the virus moves systemically throughout the plant, making it nearly impossible to cure the individual infected vine.
Management strategies focus on prevention, as curative measures are non-existent. Key practices include the use of certified virus-indexed vines, deep cultivation to destroy roots, and soil fumigation to control nematode populations. Site preparation before planting is critical, as GFLV can persist in the soil for several years following the removal of infected vines.
