Description

Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) is a destructive plant pathogen in the genus Nepovirus that specifically infects grapevines. It is globally recognized as one of the most severe viral diseases affecting Vitis species, capable of causing long-term degradation of entire vineyard plantations.

The virus is named after the characteristic symptoms it induces: fan-shaped leaves with elongated teeth and abnormal leaf blade distortions. Infected vines also exhibit stunted shoots, shortened internodes, and complex branching, which collectively disrupt the vine's structure and photosynthetic efficiency.

The biological cycle of GFLV is characterized by its transmission through soil-dwelling nematodes, primarily the dagger nematode Xiphinema index. These nematodes acquire the virus by feeding on the root systems of infected vines and transmit it to healthy vines during subsequent feeding sessions. The virus can persist in the soil within these nematodes for several years.

Development and spread are heavily influenced by soil conditions. Moist, well-aerated soils favor nematode movement and feeding, facilitating the rapid expansion of virus hotspots within a vineyard. Beyond nematode transmission, the virus is primarily disseminated through the movement of infected propagation material, such as cuttings or rootstocks.

Management and control rely heavily on a preventive strategy because there is no cure for an infected vine. Key practices include the mandatory use of virus-free, certified nursery stock, rigorous testing of vineyard soils for Xiphinema species prior to planting, and the implementation of fallow periods or nematicidal treatments in infested sites to reduce vector populations.
