Grapevine line pattern virus

Grapevine line

Description

Grapevine line pattern virus (GLPV) is a significant viral pathogen that affects grapevines (Vitis spp.). This virus belongs to the group of plant-pathogenic agents that can cause systemic infections, significantly impacting the physiology and productivity of grape plants in vineyards globally.

The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of chlorotic lines, rings, and zigzag patterns on the leaf blades, creating a distinct mosaic appearance. These symptoms are typically most visible during the early growth stages of the season. The intensity of these patterns can vary depending on the specific grapevine cultivar, the virus strain, and environmental factors such as temperature.

Regarding its biology, the virus spreads systemically throughout the vascular system of the host plant. The cycle of development is heavily dependent on vegetative propagation. In the field, the virus is primarily transmitted through the use of infected grafting materials. Additionally, soil-borne nematodes belonging to the genus Xiphinema serve as natural vectors, transferring the virus from infected to healthy roots in the vineyard soil.

The severity of the disease and its spread are influenced by the presence of vector populations and the initial health status of the planting material. The overall harm caused by GLPV includes reduced leaf surface area for photosynthesis, stunted shoot growth, decreased fruit yield, and lower sugar content in the berries. Severely affected plants may show signs of general decline and reduced longevity.

Management and control strategies are primarily focused on prevention, as there is no direct chemical cure for viral plant infections. Key actions include:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free nursery stock.
  • Implementing strict quarantine protocols for introducing new varieties.
  • Monitoring and managing nematode populations in the soil to prevent spread.
  • Immediate roguing and destruction of infected vines to eliminate the inoculum source in the field.
