Description

The Grapevine leafroll-associated virus (GLRaV) is a complex of viruses that represents one of the most economically significant threats to viticulture worldwide. Belonging to the family Closteroviridae and genera Ampelovirus or Velarivirus, this pathogen infects the phloem tissues of the vine. By disrupting the translocation of carbohydrates, it severely compromises the physiological functions of the plant.

The disease is characterized by the downward rolling of leaf margins, which is the defining symptom for which it is named. In red-fruited cultivars, the leaves exhibit a distinct reddish or purple discoloration, while in white cultivars, they develop yellowish chlorosis. The veins typically remain green, creating a sharp contrast that makes the infection easier to identify during the late summer season.

The biology of the virus involves specialized insect vectors, primarily mealybugs and scale insects. These pests acquire the virus while feeding on infected phloem sap and transmit it to healthy vines through subsequent feeding. Furthermore, human activity, specifically the propagation of infected cuttings or the use of diseased rootstock during grafting, is a primary driver of long-distance dissemination of the virus.

Environmental factors that support the survival and reproduction of insect vectors directly influence the spread of leafroll disease. Warm, humid climates are particularly conducive to high populations of mealybugs, which leads to increased viral transmission rates within a vineyard. Once a vine is infected, the virus remains systemic, persisting throughout the entire lifespan of the plant and necessitating proactive management.

The impact of this virus on crop production is substantial. It significantly reduces yield, delays fruit maturity, and lowers sugar accumulation, resulting in poor-quality berries for winemaking. Moreover, affected vines exhibit poor shoot maturation, making them highly susceptible to winter damage and decreasing the overall longevity of the vineyard, which often forces growers to replant entire sections.
