In agronomy, it is highly valued for its natural resistance to the grape phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae), an aphid-like pest that devastated European vineyards in the 19th century and remains a major threat to viticulture worldwide.
Taxonomically, Vitis rupestris is categorized as a species of the genus Vitis. It is not a plant pathogen; rather, it is a critical genetic resource used to mitigate the impacts of soil-borne pests and diseases that threaten the productivity of commercial Vitis vinifera cultivars.
