Greensnap is an abiotic physiological disorder in corn (maize) characterized by the sudden breakage of green, succulent stalks during periods of rapid growth and high wind speeds. While it is not caused by a biological pathogen, its impact on crop health is significant, as broken stalks provide entry points for various stalk-rotting fungi and bacteria.
Taxonomically, greensnap is classified as environmental stress-related damage. It is not an infection, but rather a manifestation of limited mechanical structural integrity in the plant stalk during the rapid vegetative stages, which poses a serious challenge for maize agronomists and plant breeders worldwide.
The biology of the issue stems from the rapid expansion of internode cells. When the rate of cell elongation exceeds the rate of secondary cell wall thickening and lignification, the stalks become brittle. This is particularly prevalent in corn hybrids that exhibit rapid growth patterns, making them temporarily susceptible to physical snap under mechanical stress from gusts.
Environmental conditions that favor greensnap include high soil moisture, abundant nitrogen availability, and rapid temperature fluctuations that accelerate growth. Under these conditions, the internal turgor pressure is high, and the stem tissues lack the flexibility required to withstand high-velocity wind events during the early to mid-vegetative stages.
The damage caused by greensnap is severe, often resulting in complete loss of potential yield for the affected plants. Aside from the direct reduction in stand density, the broken stems attract pests and pathogens, increasing the risk of diseases like stalk rot. The cumulative impact requires careful hybrid selection and strategic management of field inputs.
