Description

Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Orthotospovirus within the Tospoviridae family. It is a globally significant pathogen known for infecting a wide range of economically important crops, including legumes, solanaceous plants, and various ornamentals, leading to reduced yield and stunted development.

Infected plants typically exhibit symptoms such as chlorotic or necrotic ringspots, mosaic patterns on leaves, stunted growth, and fruit malformation. The disease impacts the overall physiological health of the host, often resulting in significant economic losses for farmers due to reduced quality and marketability of produce.

The biological cycle of GRSV is predominantly dependent on insect vectors, specifically thrips species. The virus is acquired by larvae during feeding on infected plants and persists through the insect's metamorphosis. Once an adult thrips becomes viruliferous, it can transmit the pathogen to healthy plants through its saliva while feeding, facilitating rapid spread across fields.

Favorable conditions for GRSV outbreaks are dictated by the population dynamics of its insect vectors. Warm, dry weather is particularly conducive to the proliferation of thrips, leading to increased transmission rates. The virus overwinters in various perennial weeds and alternative host plants, which serve as crucial reservoirs for the pathogen before the start of the next growing season.
