Citrus black spot, caused by the fungus Guignardia citricarpa (also known as Phyllosticta citricarpa), is a significant fungal pathogen within the Ascomycota phylum. It is globally recognized as a destructive plant disease affecting various citrus species, including sweet orange, lemon, and grapefruit, leading to serious trade and economic impacts in citrus-growing regions.
The primary symptom of this disease is the development of distinct spots on the surface of fruit, leaves, and young twigs. On fruits, these lesions appear as dark, circular, sunken pits, often with a grayish or black center. As the infection progresses, these spots can merge, leading to premature fruit drop and a total reduction in marketability, which is particularly devastating for the fresh fruit export market.
The life cycle of Guignardia citricarpa is complex and heavily dependent on moisture. The fungus survives primarily on dead leaves under the canopy of trees. During rainfall or heavy dew, spores are ejected from pycnidia or pseudothecia and dispersed by water droplets or wind to healthy fruit and leaves. This cyclic process continues throughout the growing season, especially when environmental conditions are wet.
Optimal development of the pathogen occurs in warm, humid climates with frequent precipitation. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C are ideal for spore germination and colonization. Because the pathogen relies on free moisture on the surface of plant tissues for infection, it is most active during periods of high rainfall and persistent leaf wetness, making geographic areas with these conditions most vulnerable.
Effective control requires an integrated pest management approach:
- Stringent quarantine procedures to prevent the movement of infected plant material between regions.
- Sanitation practices, such as removing or burying leaf litter to reduce the primary inoculum source.
- Timely application of copper-based or systemic fungicides during vulnerable growth stages.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper pruning and irrigation management to improve canopy air circulation.
