It is an obligate parasite, meaning it cannot complete its complex life cycle without alternating between two unrelated host plants to survive and reproduce.
Diseases and affected crops: This fungus is the primary causal agent of rust diseases affecting a wide range of Rosaceae members, such as apple trees, hawthorns, pears, and serviceberries. Simultaneously, it colonizes several species of juniper (specifically Juniperus virginiana), which serve as the essential perennial host for the fungus's overwintering stage.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is heterecious. During winter, the fungus persists as mycelium within galls or woody swellings on juniper branches. When spring moisture arrives, these galls produce bright orange, gelatinous telial horns.
