This organism acts as a specific phytopathogen that primarily affects various species of the Rubus genus, particularly raspberries. It is well-known in plant pathology for causing fruit malformation, which significantly impacts the quality and quantity of the harvest.

The primary symptom of the disease is the distortion of the drupelets within the raspberry fruit. Many individual drupelets remain underdeveloped, small, or greenish, failing to ripen properly. This results in lumpy, misshapen, or crumbly berries that lack the aesthetic appeal and market quality required for fresh consumption or processing.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to the raspberry flowering season. The fungus overwinters in plant tissues or on debris. During the flowering stage, fungal spores are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insect pollinators to the receptive stigmas or ovaries. Once infection occurs, the fungus interferes with the development of the drupelets, preventing the formation of mature, healthy fruit.
