Description
Helicobasidium purpureum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the Basidiomycota division. It is the primary cause of violet root rot, a destructive plant disease that affects a wide variety of cultivated crops and wild vegetation worldwide.
The fungus attacks the roots of various host plants, including sugar beets, carrots, potatoes, asparagus, and several legume species. In the field, the disease is identified by a visible violet-colored mycelial mat that develops on the surface of infected roots, eventually leading to tissue necrosis and decay.
The life cycle of the pathogen is centered in the soil, where it survives in the form of dormant mycelium or sclerotia on crop residues. Spores are produced under humid conditions and are spread through soil movement, contaminated tools, or irrigation water. The infection typically starts from the soil surface and progresses downward along the taproot.
Development is most favorable in damp, cool, and acidic soils. Once the pathogen enters the vascular system, it causes severe root damage, which restricts nutrient and water uptake. As a result, above-ground symptoms include yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and sudden wilting of the crop, often leading to total yield loss in infested patches.
Managing Helicobasidium purpureum requires an integrated approach because the pathogen is persistent in the soil. Key control measures involve:
- Practicing long-term crop rotation (avoiding host plants for at least 5–7 years)
- Liming acidic soils to raise pH levels, which inhibits fungal growth
- Ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent excessive moisture
- Rigorous sanitation to remove infected plant material from the field
