Description

Spiral nematodes of the genus Helicotylencus are members of the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida. These microscopic phytoparasites are known for their semi-endoparasitic or ectoparasitic feeding habits, which significantly damage the root systems of various host plants.

The pest affects a vast array of crops, including cereals, vegetables, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Infestation symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and severe root necrosis, which ultimately leads to reduced yields and overall plant weakening due to nutrient uptake disruption.

The life cycle of Helicotylencus consists of an egg stage and four larval stages separated by molts. These nematodes can survive in the soil for extended periods, actively migrating towards new roots. Reproduction is frequently parthenogenetic, which allows for rapid population buildup under favorable environmental conditions.

Spiral nematodes thrive in moist, well-aerated soils with moderate to high temperatures. They are easily dispersed through contaminated soil, agricultural tools, and infected planting stock, making them a major challenge in both greenhouse operations and large-scale open-field agriculture.

The economic damage caused by these nematodes is significant due to the systemic weakening of plants. Effective control strategies include the use of certified nematode-free planting material, implementation of strict crop rotation schemes, soil fumigation, and the application of biological or chemical nematicides.
