Hemp streak

Hemp streak is a significant viral disease affecting both industrial and medicinal hemp (Cannabis sativa) crops. As a plant pathogen, it primarily impairs the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and disrupts nutrient transport, leading to stunted development and poor harvest quality.

From a botanical and pathological perspective, the virus acts as a systemic agent that invades the plant's vascular system. It belongs to the group of phytoviruses transmitted either mechanically during crop maintenance or through insect vectors, which facilitates its spread across commercial agricultural fields.

The biology of the virus involves a complex cycle where vectors, typically aphids or thrips, acquire the virus while feeding on infected tissues and transmit it to healthy plants. Warm temperatures and high insect populations are the primary environmental drivers that favor the rapid proliferation and epidemic spread of the disease within a field.

Symptoms typically manifest as distinct chlorotic streaks or mosaic-like patterns on leaves, often following the leaf venation. Severe infections cause leaf deformation, reduced fiber yield, and lower seed viability. If left unmanaged, the economic damage can be substantial, leading to total yield loss in sensitive hemp cultivars.

Management and control strategies center on vector control, early detection, and sanitation. Essential steps include:

• Utilizing certified disease-free seeds.
• Monitoring fields for insect vectors and applying selective insecticides.
• Implementing strict weed control to remove alternative hosts.
• Removing and destroying symptomatic plants to eliminate the inoculum source.
