Description

Annosus root rot is a severe fungal disease of coniferous trees caused by the basidiomycete fungus Heterobasidion annosum. This pathogen is considered one of the most economically significant threats to forest ecosystems worldwide, causing white root and butt rot that degrades timber quality and leads to tree mortality.

The fungus primarily infects conifer species, including spruce, pine, and fir. The infection often starts through spores landing on freshly cut stumps, which then grow into the root system. Once established, the pathogen spreads underground from tree to tree through root grafts or direct contact between healthy and diseased root systems.

The biology of Heterobasidion annosum is characterized by the production of basidiospores on the fruiting bodies (conks) found at the base of infected trees or on stumps. These spores allow the fungus to colonize new areas, while the vegetative mycelium provides a persistent, long-term threat within the soil environment for many years.

Favorable conditions for the pathogen include mild temperatures and moist soil environments. The fungus is highly aggressive in managed forests where frequent thinning operations provide fresh stump surfaces, creating entry points for the pathogen if protective measures are not implemented immediately after cutting.

Control and protection measures focus on preventing the initial colonization of stumps and managing spread in existing stands. Strategies include treating freshly cut stump surfaces with fungicides or biological control agents like Phlebiopsis gigantea. Furthermore, diversifying forest plantations by introducing resistant species and careful stand hygiene are essential to minimizing the impact of this pathogen.
