Algae heterosporiosis

Heterosporium algarum is a species of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycetes) within the genus Heterosporium. It acts as a specialized phytopathogen that infects various species of algae, triggering a condition known as heterosporiosis. In aquaculture and phycology, this fungus is recognized as a significant biological stressor capable of causing substantial economic loss.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of necrotic lesions on the thallus, which gradually leads to tissue decay and structural degradation. As the fungus colonizes the host, it interferes with vital metabolic functions, resulting in stunted growth and a decline in the nutritional and commercial value of the harvested biomass. The damage caused by this pathogen can severely affect the productivity of algae cultivation sites.
