Heterosporium maculatum (syn. Cladosporium iridis) is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Hyphomycetes class. It is a specialized necrotrophic parasite that primarily infects various species of the Iridaceae family. The fungus invades the leaf tissues, resulting in the formation of fungal mycelium that erupts through the epidermis to produce conidia, which act as the primary inoculum for further spread during the growing season.

Diseases and host plants
The main disease associated with this pathogen is heterosporiosis, commonly referred to as iris leaf spot. Symptoms appear as small, circular to elliptical spots that turn reddish-brown or gray-brown with a distinct dark border. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, covering the entire leaf blade and causing it to wither and die prematurely, which significantly impairs the plant's aesthetic and physiological integrity.

Biology and life cycle
The fungus overwinters as mycelium and conidia in infected plant debris, fallen leaves, and sometimes on the surface of iris rhizomes. In the spring, when temperatures rise and moisture becomes available, the conidia are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or irrigation water. The infection cycle is highly dependent on humidity levels, with warm, wet weather significantly accelerating the germination and penetration processes.

Economic and aesthetic impact
The damage caused by Heterosporium maculatum is primarily economic and aesthetic. Premature defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, which hinders the accumulation of reserves in the rhizomes. This depletion leads to reduced flowering the following year, stunted plant growth, and an overall decline in plant vigor, making the irises more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Protection and control measures
Integrated disease management is essential for controlling iris leaf spot:

  • Strict sanitation by removing and burning all dead or infected leaves in the autumn.
  • Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow and reduce leaf wetness duration.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to prevent the spread of spores between plants.
  • Applying preventative fungicidal treatments, particularly copper-based or systemic triazole fungicides, during periods of high humidity.
  • Monitoring the garden regularly to spot and prune initial infections before they spread.
