It acts as a specialized plant pathogen that targets ornamental species, primarily focusing on Petunia hybrids, causing necrotic lesions on the leaves and stems, which significantly degrades the aesthetic value of the plants.
The disease symptoms typically appear as small, irregularly shaped spots on the leaves. These spots gradually expand and transition in color from pale green to tan or dark brown, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In environments with high humidity, the centers of these lesions develop a dense, olive-green or black velvety fungal growth. This mass consists of the conidia, which act as the primary inocula for secondary infection cycles throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of Heterosporium petuniae is highly dependent on environmental moisture. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or spores within plant debris, soil, or potentially on seed surfaces. During favorable weather, conidia are disseminated through air currents, splashing water from irrigation, or contaminated tools.
