Phytophthora is a genus of plant-damaging oomycetes, often referred to as water molds. Taxonomically, they are not true fungi but are related to brown algae. The most economically significant species is Phytophthora infestans, which is the primary cause of late blight in various agricultural crops.

This pathogen specifically targets solanaceous crops, with potatoes and tomatoes being the most susceptible. The disease causes necrotic lesions on foliage, stem lesions, and tuber rot, which can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged during a growing season with high moisture levels.

The biology of the pathogen relies heavily on water availability. It produces sporangia that release motile zoospores, which swim in water droplets to find host tissue. These organisms can survive in infected tubers or dormant oospores within the soil, allowing the disease to emerge year after year in the same field.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the spread of Phytophthora. Periods of high humidity, moderate temperatures (15°C to 20°C), and frequent rainfall create the ideal environment for the rapid formation and dispersion of spores via wind and water splash, leading to sudden outbreaks.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach, including the use of certified disease-free seeds and resistant cultivars. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides, while cultural practices such as drainage improvement and proper plant spacing help reduce the microclimate humidity necessary for the pathogen to thrive.
