Hirschmanniella mucronata belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and family Pratylenchidae. It is a microscopic, migratory endoparasitic nematode that specifically targets the root systems of various plant species. This pathogen is globally recognized for its significant impact on rice production systems, particularly in regions where rice is grown under submerged conditions.
The primary host of this nematode is rice (Oryza sativa). Infestation leads to severe root necrosis, impaired nutrient uptake, and physiological stress. Symptoms often include stunted plant growth, chlorotic leaves, reduced tillering, and an overall decline in plant vigor. In cases of heavy infestation, the root system decays, often leading to lodging and substantial yield losses.
The biology of Hirschmanniella mucronata is uniquely adapted to aquatic environments. The nematode completes its life cycle—consisting of eggs, four larval stages, and adults—both within the root tissues and in the surrounding wet soil. Unlike cyst-forming nematodes, this species remains mobile throughout its adult life, allowing it to migrate between roots and soil particles with ease.
Development and spread are favored by warm temperatures and saturated soil conditions typical of paddy fields. The pathogen can survive for extended periods in moist soil and irrigation ditches, even in the absence of a primary host. It acts as an opportunistic pest that can persist in alternative host plants, making long-term eradication challenging without strict management practices.
