Hymenochaete agglutinans is a wood-decaying fungus within the Hymenochaetaceae family, recognized as a significant plant pathogen that causes necrotic lesions on various woody species. The name reflects its distinct biological behavior of forming thick fungal mats that essentially "glue" neighboring twigs and small branches together, often leading to structural damage and branch death.

This pathogen primarily targets deciduous trees and shrubs, including common orchard varieties like apples and pears. The damage is characterized by the colonization of the bark and cambium layers. As the fungus feeds on the host tissue, it disrupts the vascular system, causing the affected branches to wilt and eventually become necrotic, leading to localized dieback of the woody frame.

The life cycle involves the production of spores that are disseminated primarily by wind and splashing rain. Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, typically via wounds, fissures in the bark, or pruning scars, they germinate and colonize the bark. This allows the fungus to establish a stronghold within the host, slowly spreading through the woody tissue during favorable environmental windows.

Development and spread are highly favored by high humidity, poor air circulation, and dense canopies. Environmental factors such as prolonged rainfall and mild temperatures are critical for sporulation and subsequent infection. Because the fungus thrives in stagnant, humid environments, orchards with poor maintenance are particularly susceptible to widespread outbreaks of this disease.
