In agronomy, the term Inherited refers to pathogens characterized by vertical transmission, where the disease agent is passed from the parent plant to the offspring through seeds or vegetative propagules. These pathogens are typically classified as seed-borne or seed-transmitted. They represent a significant challenge in crop production because the inoculum is introduced into the soil along with the crop, rather than arriving from external environmental sources.

These pathogens include various species of smut fungi, seed-transmitted bacteria, and systemic viruses. Key crops affected by such infections include cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. The pathogen may reside within the seed coat, the endosperm, or even within the embryo itself, making it highly protected from standard environmental fluctuations until germination begins.

The biology of these pathogens is strictly linked to the host's germination and growth phases. As soon as the seed absorbs moisture and begins to metabolize, the pathogen breaks its dormancy. The infection often targets the developing plumule and radicle, causing reduced emergence, stunted growth, or systemic disease symptoms that manifest as the plant matures.

Environmental conditions, particularly temperature and soil moisture at planting time, dictate the severity of the outbreak. While some pathogens require specific cool conditions to infect, others thrive in warm, humid soil. The primary concern is the spread of the pathogen within the plant's vascular system, which makes systemic damage irreversible and hinders the plant's ability to reach its yield potential.

Control measures are essential to manage inherited infections:

  • Rigorous seed health testing to detect latent infections.
  • Chemical seed treatments (fungicides and bactericides) to eliminate inoculum.
  • Use of certified, disease-free seed stocks.
  • Implementation of crop rotation and field sanitation to minimize soil-borne carryover.
