Alternaria is a genus of ascomycete fungi that acts as a significant plant pathogen, causing a wide range of diseases in diverse crops. It is known globally for infecting both commercial agricultural crops and decorative plants, causing considerable economic damage to the agricultural sector due to loss of yield and quality.

The diseases caused by these fungi are commonly referred to as alternaria blight or leaf spot. They frequently target solanaceous crops like potatoes and tomatoes, as well as oilseeds like sunflowers and canola. Symptoms typically appear as necrotic, dark-pigmented lesions characterized by concentric rings that gradually kill the leaf tissue.

The biology of Alternaria involves the production of conidia that are easily dispersed by wind, water splashes, and human activity. The pathogen survives in the soil, on plant debris, and within infected seeds for multiple seasons. Once an infection is established, the fungus can rapidly colonize plant tissue by secreting enzymes and toxins.

Optimal environmental conditions for the development and spread of Alternaria include high humidity, leaf wetness, and moderate to warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Frequent rainfall followed by sunny weather creates the perfect microclimate for sporulation, leading to rapid disease progression throughout the field.

To effectively control and manage this pathogen, agronomists recommend a combination of strategies:

  • Applying fungicides, particularly those containing strobilurins or triazoles, at early stages of infection.
  • Utilizing clean, treated seeds and selecting resistant plant varieties.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation to disrupt the pathogen's lifecycle.
  • Managing irrigation systems to reduce leaf wetness duration and improving field aeration.
