Description
Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus, within the Potyviridae family. This virus is a major concern for growers as it causes systemic infection in various Allium species, significantly impairing the plant's health and photosynthetic capacity.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic yellow stripes, leaf curling, and severe stunting. Infected plants exhibit distorted foliage and reduced bulb size, leading to substantial yield losses. The severity of the disease often depends on the timing of the initial infection, with earlier infections causing more pronounced damage to the crop's development and bulb quality.
The biological cycle of OYDV involves non-persistent transmission by aphid vectors, most notably the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). The virus is acquired by the aphid during brief probing sessions on infected plants and is transmitted immediately to healthy ones. Notably, the virus is not seed-borne, meaning that survival between seasons primarily relies on infected bulbs or volunteer plants.
Environmental conditions favoring high aphid populations directly correlate with increased disease incidence. Warm and dry weather promotes rapid insect migration, facilitating the spread of the virus across fields. The virus can persist in perennial reservoirs or stored bulbs used for replanting, serving as a constant source of inoculation at the start of every growing season.
Control strategies are strictly preventative. Farmers should prioritize the use of certified virus-free bulb sets and maintain strict spatial isolation from older onion crops. Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations, along with the rapid rogueing of symptomatic plants, remains the most effective approach to limiting the virus spread within production systems.
