Koltin is a genus of plant pathogenic fungi known to cause significant damage to various agricultural crops, particularly cereals. Belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Basidiomycota, this pathogen is recognized for its ability to interfere with the vascular development of plants, leading to severe physiological disturbances.
The diseases caused by Koltin primarily manifest in cereal grains, including wheat and barley. Symptoms often include stunted growth, necrotic lesions on foliage, and localized tissue collapse. These conditions severely hinder the plant's capacity to accumulate biomass and nutrients during the critical stages of heading and grain filling.
The life cycle of the pathogen involves the dissemination of spores that can persist in soil or crop residues. When environmental conditions align with the physiological needs of the fungus, these spores germinate and colonize the host tissues. The mycelium penetrates the epidermis of the plant, drawing nutrients and expanding throughout the host’s vascular system.

Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for local transmission within a field. Outbreaks are most frequent in seasons characterized by excessive moisture, which allows the pathogen to cycle rapidly through multiple generations.

To effectively control the spread, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential. These include the cultivation of disease-resistant varieties, proper field sanitation, rotation with non-host crops, and the application of systemic fungicides at the onset of symptoms to mitigate further damage.
