Blackberry rust
Kuehneola uredinis
Description
Systematic position and type of pathogen. Kuehneola uredinis is a basidiomycetous fungus belonging to the order Pucciniales. It is an obligate parasite, which means it relies entirely on the living tissues of its host plant to survive and complete its life cycle. This pathogen is a major concern for commercial and amateur growers of Rubus species, specifically blackberries.
Diseases and susceptible crops. This fungus causes the disease known as blackberry rust. It primarily targets various cultivars of blackberry (Rubus fruticosus group) and can occasionally affect raspberry. The disease is characterized by the appearance of bright orange or yellow pustules, which typically form on the leaves, petioles, and canes, disrupting the plant's normal physiological functions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Kuehneola uredinis involves multiple spore stages, typical of rust fungi. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium in the infected canes or on fallen leaves. In the spring, spores are released and disseminated by wind and splashing water to infect healthy green tissues. The repeating cycle of urediniospores allows the fungus to spread rapidly throughout the growing season.
Conditions for development and damage. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal conditions for the development of rust outbreaks. The damage is significant: the disease reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage, weakens the plant's overall vigor, and decreases the quality and quantity of fruit production. Severe infections can lead to cane breakage and reduced cold hardiness.
Measures for protection and control. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this disease:
- Sanitation: Prune and destroy all infected canes during the dormant season to reduce inoculum.
- Cultural practices: Ensure adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness duration.
- Chemical control: Apply appropriate fungicides (such as copper-based products or systemic triazoles) preventively or at the first signs of symptoms.
- Monitoring: Regularly inspect the undersides of leaves and stems for early signs of yellow pustules.
