Description
Leptosphaeria acuta is a fungal pathogen within the Ascomycota phylum, known as the causative agent of various stem diseases. While it is primarily recognized for its role as a saprophyte on dead plant material, specifically nettles, it exhibits opportunistic parasitic behavior that can impact cultivated plant species under favorable environmental conditions.
The fungus is responsible for developing lesions, necrosis, and premature tissue decay on the stems of affected plants. In agricultural settings, infection typically manifests as dark-colored patches on the lower stem sections, which can eventually lead to tissue fragility and reduced structural integrity of the plant.
The biological cycle of Leptosphaeria acuta relies on the presence of overwintering structures known as pseudothecia, found on decaying plant debris. During periods of wet, temperate weather, these structures release ascospores, which are dispersed by wind and rain splash to neighboring susceptible host plants.
Environmental conditions favoring the development of this pathogen include high humidity, moderate rainfall, and temperatures that prevent rapid surface drying. Dense canopy closure in crop fields acts as a catalyst for infection, as it creates a localized microclimate that preserves the moisture necessary for spore germination and mycelial growth.
Economic damage is caused by the disruption of nutrient and water transport within the stems, resulting in stunted growth and compromised harvest quality. Effective control strategies include:
- Removal and proper burial of crop residues.
- Crop rotation with non-host species.
- Maintenance of proper row spacing for better air circulation.
- Application of systemic fungicides when disease pressure is high.
