Description
Leptotrochila leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Leptotrochila medicaginis, which primarily affects alfalfa (lucerne) crops worldwide. As a specialized pathogen, it targets the foliage, causing significant defoliation, which negatively impacts the nutritional quality and overall biomass production of the forage.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease are small, circular, dark brown to black spots on the leaflets. Unlike other leaf spots, these lesions often feature tiny, shiny black apothecia (fruiting bodies) in the center, visible with a magnifying glass. Under severe infection, the foliage turns yellow (chlorosis), withers, and drops prematurely, leading to significant yield losses in hay production.
The life cycle of Leptotrochila medicaginis is primarily associated with infected plant debris left on the field. The fungus overwinters as mycelium in dead leaves and stems. During the spring, under favorable moisture conditions, the fungus produces ascospores within the apothecia. These spores are disseminated by rain splash and wind, initiating primary infections on newly emerging alfalfa shoots.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of this disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures between 18 °C and 22 °C are optimal for spore germination and infection. Dense, lush alfalfa stands often suffer more severe outbreaks because the lack of air circulation keeps the foliage moist for extended periods, facilitating rapid fungal colonization.
The economic impact of this pathogen includes not only reduced dry matter yield but also lower protein content and reduced digestibility of the fodder. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management practices:
- Selecting alfalfa varieties with reported resistance;
- Harvesting the crop early if a severe outbreak is detected to remove inoculum;
- Utilizing crop rotation to break the disease cycle;
- Ensuring adequate soil fertility to promote vigorous plant growth.
