Description

Lettuce infectious yellows virus (LIYV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Closteroviridae family and the Crinivirus genus. This virus causes serious economic damage to lettuce crops, as well as to melons, sugar beets, and various other host plants. It is primarily identified as a vascular disease that impairs the physiological processes of the host.

Symptoms of the disease typically appear as interveinal yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, which become brittle and may roll downward. Stunting is a hallmark of the infection, often leading to total yield loss in affected plants. The reduction in photosynthetic area significantly impacts the development of the lettuce head, making the plants unsellable.

The virus is transmitted by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). It follows a semi-persistent transmission cycle, meaning the whitefly acquires the virus after feeding on an infected plant and transmits it to a healthy one after a short inoculation period. The virus persists in the whitefly for several days, allowing for wide-scale field dispersal.

Conditions favorable for the disease include warm, dry climates, which facilitate rapid whitefly reproduction. Weeds serve as critical inoculum reservoirs during the off-season. When whiteflies migrate from infected weeds to susceptible commercial crops, they carry the virus, triggering local outbreaks that can devastate an entire field if not contained promptly.

Control strategies are primarily focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Key practices include the removal of host weeds from field perimeters to reduce viral reservoirs and the rigorous application of insecticides to manage whitefly populations. Furthermore, using reflective mulches and fine-mesh row covers can effectively exclude whiteflies from entering the crop area, thereby preventing the initial spread of the infection.
