Description
Lettuce mosaic is a significant plant disease caused by the Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV), which belongs to the genus Potyvirus in the family Potyviridae. This pathogen causes systemic infection in host plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions that result in stunted growth and unmarketable produce.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Asteraceae family, most notably lettuce (Lactuca sativa). However, the virus also affects endive, escarole, and several pea varieties. Furthermore, various weeds, such as common groundsel, act as essential reservoirs, allowing the virus to survive and spread in the environment throughout the growing season.
The virus biology is centered on two main transmission routes: seed-borne transmission and insect vectors. The most critical vector is the aphid (e.g., Myzus persicae), which transmits the virus in a non-persistent manner after feeding on infected plants. The seed-borne nature of the virus is particularly dangerous as it facilitates long-distance spread.
Environmental conditions favoring the activity of aphid populations are directly linked to the incidence of the disease. Symptoms typically manifest as mosaic patterns on leaves, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf distortion, and significant plant stunting. In extreme cases, if the infection occurs at the seedling stage, the entire crop may fail to reach marketable size.
Management and control strategies focus on preventing the introduction and spread of the virus. Key measures include:
- Using high-quality, virus-indexed seed stocks.
- Eliminating host weeds in and around the production area.
- Implementing regular monitoring and control of aphid vectors using chemical or biological insecticides.
- Adopting spatial isolation from older, potentially infected lettuce fields.
