Description
Systematic position and type of pathogen. Leveillula leguminosarum is a fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and order Erysiphales. It is known as an endo-ectophytic pathogen, which means that while its mycelium appears on the surface of the leaves, the hyphae also penetrate the internal leaf tissues through the stomata, differentiating it from strictly superficial powdery mildew species.
Diseases and susceptible crops. This pathogen is primarily responsible for powdery mildew on various leguminous crops. Key hosts include chickpeas, lentils, peas, and alfalfa. The disease manifests as whitish, dusty patches on the underside of leaves, which can spread to cover stems and pods, eventually leading to chlorosis and tissue necrosis.
Biology and life cycle. The pathogen overwinters as cleistothecia on infected crop residues or perennial host plants. With the onset of favorable conditions, ascospores are released and dispersed by wind to colonize new hosts. Once the infection is established, the fungus develops an internal mycelium, feeding on the host cells via haustoria, which saps the plant's resources and stunts its development.
Development conditions and impact. The pathogen thrives in environments with moderate humidity and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C. The damage is severe, as the infection causes premature leaf senescence and defoliation. This leads to a significant decrease in photosynthetic capacity, resulting in lower yields, smaller seed size, and reduced commercial quality of the crop.
Control and management strategies. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for mitigating the spread of the disease. Growers should prioritize the following measures:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-leguminous species to break the pathogen's life cycle;
- Ensuring proper sanitation by removing or burying infected crop residues;
- Selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars suitable for the specific region;
- Monitoring fields during the early stages of the growing season;
- Applying fungicides (e.g., triazoles or strobilurins) strictly according to recommended dosages when symptoms appear.
