The fungus acts as a facultative parasite, often exploiting weakened trees, wounds, or frost damage to establish an infection and colonize plant tissues.
The host range of Libertella blepharis includes a variety of broad-leaved trees, most notably species within the Salicaceae family such as willows and poplars, as well as several fruit-bearing woody plants. The disease is characterized by the formation of bark lesions, cankers, and the production of distinct fungal fruiting bodies that emerge through the cracks in the infected bark as tiny, light-colored structures.
The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to its environment and the physiological state of the host. Spores are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects, settling on open wounds or areas of damaged tissue.
