Description

Lophodermium oxycocci is an ascomycete fungus that serves as the primary causal agent of snow blight in cranberry plants. This specialized pathogen belongs to the order Rhytismatales and is a significant concern for commercial cranberry growers worldwide. It primarily targets the foliage of the plant, leading to necrotic lesions that severely impact the plant's physiological functions and overall yield potential.

The fungus affects both wild and cultivated varieties of cranberries. The symptoms usually become apparent in the spring immediately following snowmelt. Affected leaves display reddish-brown discoloration, eventually turning grey or black as the tissue dies. A diagnostic feature is the presence of small, black, oval-shaped fruit bodies (apothecia) scattered across the surface of the infected leaves.

The biological cycle of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly the presence of a persistent snow cover. During the winter, the fungus thrives under the snow, slowly colonizing the leaves. As temperatures rise in the spring, the pathogen produces ascospores within the apothecia. These spores are then disseminated by wind and rain splashes to neighboring healthy leaves, initiating new infection cycles.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread and severity of the disease include high humidity, prolonged winter snow cover, and poor airflow within the planting canopy. Excessive nitrogen fertilization, which creates dense and succulent foliage, can also increase the susceptibility of the plants to Lophodermium oxycocci. Effective disease management requires minimizing these favorable conditions through careful field maintenance.

The impact of this pathogen can be devastating, leading to severe defoliation and, in extreme cases, total crop loss due to the death of reproductive and vegetative buds. Controlling this disease effectively involves several management strategies:

  • Application of appropriate fungicides during the pre-winter dormancy phase.
  • Proper canopy management to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
  • Removal of leaf litter and infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum level.
  • Maintaining adequate field drainage to prevent prolonged moisture buildup during spring.
