Description
Lucerne transient streak virus (LTSV) is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Sobemovirus. It is a significant concern in the cultivation of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), as it can compromise the longevity and yield potential of forage stands. The virus particles are small, isometric, and composed of a single-stranded RNA genome enclosed in a protein capsid.
The disease primarily manifests on leaves as transient mosaic patterns, chlorotic streaks, and mottling. The term "transient" refers to the periodic nature of the symptoms, which may appear during specific developmental stages or under certain environmental conditions and then become less visible as the plant reaches maturity, despite the ongoing systemic infection.
The transmission of LTSV occurs largely through contaminated seeds and mechanical contact. During harvesting operations, such as mowing or baling, the virus is easily transferred from infected to healthy plants via plant sap on contaminated machinery. Soil-borne transmission and reservoir hosts among weed species also contribute to the persistence of the virus within agricultural landscapes.
Environmental conditions that favor lush plant growth often coincide with the rapid systemic movement of the virus throughout the plant host. While the virus does not typically require insect vectors for its primary spread, human-mediated activities are the most critical factor in facilitating its movement between fields and across different geographic regions. Once introduced into a field, the virus can persist for several seasons.
The economic impact of LTSV includes a reduction in biomass production and a decline in the nutritional quality of alfalfa forage. Controlling the virus is challenging since there are no chemical viricides available for field use. Therefore, management relies on strict preventative measures, including the use of certified virus-free seeds, implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment to prevent mechanical transmission, and regular monitoring of fields for suspicious leaf patterns to rogue out infected plants early.
