Macrophoma is a genus of coelomycetous fungi that serves as a significant phytopathogen affecting various plant species. Belonging to the order Botryosphaeriales, this fungus is known for inducing necrosis and various types of spot diseases in both foliage and fruits. It is widely recognized in agriculture for its ability to cause severe economic damage to orchards, vineyards, and field crops.

The host range of Macrophoma is extensive, encompassing many perennial woody plants and smaller cultivars. The primary symptom of infection is the development of localized necrotic lesions that eventually coalesce. These lesions are characterized by the presence of numerous pycnidia—small, dark fruiting bodies that emerge from the host tissue, indicating the maturation of asexual spores (conidia).

The biology and lifecycle of this pathogen are dictated by environmental humidity and temperature. Macrophoma propagates primarily through the release of pycnidiospores, which are dispersed by splashing water, wind, or human activity. Once the spores land on susceptible tissue, they germinate under high humidity and penetrate the plant's surface, establishing a parasitic relationship that drains the host of nutrients.

Optimal conditions for the spread of this disease involve prolonged periods of wet weather and temperatures ranging from 18 °C to 25 °C. The fungus is highly resilient, surviving the dormant season as mycelium or as pycnidia within dead twigs, bark crevices, or infected fallen leaves. This ensures that the pathogen remains present in the field, ready to re-infect emerging growth when favorable conditions return.

Managing and controlling Macrophoma requires a combination of sanitation and chemical protection. Effective strategies include:

  • Rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying dead or infected plant debris.
  • Pruning of affected branches to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Application of protective fungicides during periods of high humidity.
  • Cultivating plant varieties that are less susceptible to fungal infections.
  • Promoting good airflow to keep foliage and fruit surfaces dry.
