Description
Macrophoma zeae is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing a leaf spot disease in maize crops. Systematically, it belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Macrophoma. As a member of the group of imperfect fungi (Deuteromycetes), it propagates through asexual spores produced within pycnidia, which serve as its primary reproductive structures.
The primary host for this fungus is corn (maize). The disease manifests on foliage and leaf sheaths, creating distinct lesions that progressively expand. As the infection advances, the necrotic spots cover larger areas of the leaf blade, severely hindering the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis and leading to premature wilting and tissue death.
The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to the presence of infected crop debris, which acts as the primary reservoir for the fungus during the winter months. As spring arrives with sufficient moisture and favorable temperatures, the fungus produces spores (pycnidiospores) that are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and physical contact within the canopy, starting the new infection cycle.
Development and spread of Macrophoma zeae are favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. High plant density in fields, which limits air circulation and retains moisture, creates an optimal microclimate for the pathogen to thrive. Plants already suffering from nutrient stress or poor agricultural management are notably more susceptible to colonization by this fungus.
The economic impact of the disease is linked to reduced yields of both grain and forage due to the loss of photosynthetic leaf area. Effective control requires an integrated approach, including the rotation of crops, thorough tillage to incorporate infested residues into the soil, the use of resistant maize varieties, and timely application of foliar fungicides when conditions are conducive to disease outbreak.
