Description
Maize bushy stunt (MBS) is a significant systemic plant disease caused by the Maize bushy stunt phytoplasma. As an obligate parasite of the plant phloem, this pathogen disrupts the normal physiological processes of corn, leading to stunted growth and characteristic morphological abnormalities in the host plants.
Taxonomically, the pathogen belongs to the class Mollicutes. These microorganisms lack a rigid cell wall, making them highly specialized in their habitat. They are strictly transmitted by phloem-feeding insects, specifically leafhoppers, which serve as both the vector and the primary reservoir for the pathogen in the environment.
The vector Dalbulus maidis is crucial for the spread of the disease. Upon ingesting phloem sap from an infected plant, the phytoplasma colonizes the leafhopper. After an incubation period, the insect becomes a persistent carrier, efficiently spreading the pathogen to healthy corn plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
Symptoms of the disease are diverse and include excessive tillering (bushy appearance), leaf chlorosis or reddening, and significant internode shortening. The physiological damage prevents proper ear development, leading to drastically reduced grain yields and poor quality of the harvest if the infection occurs early in the season.
Effective management requires integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. These include the cultivation of resistant corn hybrids, the application of systemic insecticides to control leafhopper populations, and rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts. Additionally, avoiding overlapping planting cycles in susceptible regions helps break the disease transmission chain.
