Description

Maize dwarf, known formally as Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV), is a widespread viral pathogen affecting corn and other grass species. Belonging to the Potyvirus genus, this virus is a significant constraint on maize production worldwide, causing leaf mosaic, stunting, and reduced grain yield.

The virus particle is flexuous and filamentous in shape. It is transmitted primarily by various aphid species in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner. This means that aphids can acquire the virus after very short feeding periods on infected plants and immediately transfer it to healthy ones without the virus needing to circulate within the insect.

Symptoms typically include light and dark green mosaic patterns on leaves, which may develop into elongated streaks along the veins. In susceptible hybrids, the infection results in severe stunting, reduced ear size, and poor grain filling. The severity of these symptoms often depends on the growth stage at which the plant was infected; early-season infections are particularly damaging.

The ecological survival of the virus depends heavily on perennial weed hosts, such as Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). The virus overwinters in the rhizomes of these weeds, and as aphids migrate from these hosts to emerging corn fields in the spring, the disease cycle is initiated. Environmental factors that favor aphid population growth, such as mild temperatures, significantly increase the rate of spread.

Management strategies focus on reducing the primary inoculum and minimizing vector activity. Key practices include:

  • Planting tolerant or resistant corn hybrids.
  • Eliminating weed hosts like Johnsongrass in and around fields.
  • Adjusting planting dates to avoid peak aphid migration times.
  • Applying insecticides to suppress aphid populations, although this has limited efficacy in preventing non-persistent viral transmission.
