Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Machlomovirus of the Tombusviridae family. It is known as a major contributor to the Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) disease, which significantly affects global maize production.
The virus primarily affects maize and sorghum crops. The disease manifests as severe chlorosis, leaf necrosis, stunted plant growth, and sterile or poorly developed cobs. The severity of symptoms often depends on the timing of infection, with early-stage infections causing total crop failure.
Biological transmission is predominantly carried out by insect vectors such as beetles (Diabrotica spp.) and thrips. Furthermore, the virus can be transmitted mechanically through farm equipment, contaminated seeds, and persist in soil for extended periods, making it highly difficult to eradicate once it establishes in a field.
