The causative agent of this disease is the Maize rayado fino virus (MRFV), which is classified under the genus Marafivirus. It is a small, non-enveloped, isometric virus containing single-stranded RNA. Being a highly specialized plant pathogen, it specifically impacts members of the Poaceae family, primarily maize, necessitating a specific insect vector for successful transmission across host populations.
Symptoms and host crops
The primary host for this pathogen is maize (Zea mays). The most diagnostic symptom is the appearance of small, chlorotic dots that align into dashed lines along the leaf veins, giving the plant a "striped" appearance. As the infection progresses, systemic chlorosis occurs, leading to reduced plant height, weakened stalks, and significant grain loss due to poor kernel set and diminished ear development.
Biology and life cycle
MRFV is not mechanically transmissible or seed-borne. Its sole natural vector is the corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis. The insect acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant during a specific acquisition period. After a latent incubation period within the insect's body, the leafhopper becomes a persistent, circulative vector capable of transmitting the virus to healthy plants throughout its lifespan.
Conditions for development and spread
The incidence and severity of the disease are directly correlated with the population dynamics of Dalbulus maidis. The virus thrives in tropical and subtropical climates where host plants and insect vectors are present throughout the year. Agricultural practices that allow for continuous maize cropping create an ideal environment for the virus to persist, move between fields, and build up high levels of inoculum in the environment.
Damage and control measures
The economic impact of MRFV is significant, potentially causing yield losses ranging from moderate to severe depending on the growth stage at which infection occurs. Management strategies include the cultivation of resistant or tolerant maize varieties, which is the most effective approach. Additionally, controlling the leafhopper population using insecticide applications during early crop stages and practicing crop rotation or fallow periods to break the host-vector cycle are crucial for successful farm management.
