Maize red stripe virus (MRSV) is a significant viral pathogen classified within the genus Macluravirus, family Potyviridae. This pathogen specifically infects maize and several related species within the Poaceae family. The systemic nature of the virus leads to long-term physiological stress on the host plant, severely impacting agricultural productivity in infected regions.
The primary clinical signs of the disease are characterized by chlorotic and necrotic streaks appearing in shades of red or brown along the leaf veins. As the infection progresses, these stripes expand, leading to systemic necrosis and the premature senescence of leaf tissues. Infected maize plants exhibit reduced height, stunted growth, and poor grain development, often resulting in significant yield losses.
The life cycle and transmission of the virus are heavily reliant on insect vectors, most notably aphids. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant tissues and subsequently transmit it during their feeding activity on healthy host plants. Natural reservoirs, such as perennial wild grasses, play a crucial role in the virus's survival, acting as an inoculum source for new crops.
